Dig for Victory Education Programme
The Dig for Victory Campaign was a response to the wartime problem of food shortages. The population was encouraged to grow their own produce wherever they could, in their gardens, allotments, playing fields and even on top of their Anderson Shelters. The campaign reflects many issues that we face today about recycling, sustainability and healthy eating.
The Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms are offering free school workshops from June to the end of September in the Dig for Victory allotment. The workshops will look at the Dig for Victory Campaign, recycling, composting, sustainability and the environment. These take place in the allotment, giving the pupils a chance to investigate the plants and wildlife at first hand. The workshops last up to an hour and can be made as part of a visit to the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms and St. James’ Park.
A free Dig for Victory Teachers’ Pack is also available that will help you create your own allotment or container garden at school. It contains activity and information sheets, a facsimile leaflet and poster.
To book an allotment workshop or order a teachers pack, then please contact the Learning and Access Department at the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, on 020 7766 0130/0132, or email cwr-edu@iwm.org.uk.
