Planning Your Visit

Length of Visit
Your group will need at least 45 minutes to look round the Churchill Museum, and 45 minutes to explore the Cabinet War Rooms; if they need the toilets, the shop or the café, you should allow two hours in all.  Any activities in the Education Centre will require more time.

Journey time
Ensure that you leave ample time for the journey here and back. Even with the Congestion Charge, travel into the centre of London can be very slow.  If you are planning to use a coach you should satisfy yourself that the company has quoted a realistic amount of time for this. A late arrival here may mean that your group will have to queue to get in (especially during the summer months) or that it will not be possible to take the teaching session booked.

London Schools
Don’t forget that you can get free public transport by telephoning TfL on 020 7918 3954 or visiting their website www.tfl.gov.uk/schoolparty

Arrival
We ask that your group arrives within 10 minutes of your booked time of arrival, or inform us if you are running late.

Access
The group entrance is in King Charles Street, at the top of Clive Steps.
King Charles Street is not open to traffic. We recommend that coaches drop off group parties on Whitehall.

The group entrance may not be accessible to individuals with a physical disability, as it involves 30 steps down. If a member of your group needs to use a lift in order to access the basement level (and exhibition), please bring your group to the main entrance in Horseguards Road.  Please note the level access route from Whitehall is via Parliament Street, Great George Street and Horseguards Road.

If you find that the group entrance is not open, please send one of your party to the main entrance to alert us of your arrival.

On the day
The Churchill Museum Cabinet War Rooms is an unusual site – the size and shape of the rooms makes them prone to congestion and it is difficult to keep visual track of large parties of visitors. Please ensure therefore, that all adults on the visit are aware of this, and that they should supervise their group of pupils throughout your time in the site.

Behaviour
Eating, drinking, chewing gum, running or shouting in the museum are not allowed and we expect that pupils will behave in a courteous way towards our own staff and to other visitors.

Lunch
Groups can eat their lunch in the Clore Education Centre if booked in advance. Our Switch Room Café can seat 30 people and serves hot and cold drinks and light meals.

Photography
Flash and video photography are allowed in the Cabinet War Rooms, but not in the Churchill Museum.  Please ensure that your group is aware of this restriction.

The shop
The shop is situated at the end of the tour. Please do not use it as a collection point for your group. Pupils must be supervised by an adult when in the shop.

Toilets
These are situated close to the entrance. There are also toilets accessible for wheelchair users.
