Videoconferences

RAF veteran Jack Ball shares his experiences
Churchill War Rooms is delighted to be able to offer free video conferences for your students with eyewitnesses and veterans from the Second World War.

Following a successful pilot programme we are able to offer a new timetable of conferences involving veterans of the RAF and the Normandy Landings, as well as eyewitnesses who were evacuated as children during the war. Conferences allow veterans and eyewitnesses to speak to students about their experiences of war, and we encourage teachers and students to prepare appropriate questions to ask in order to establish a dialogue about the war and how it is remembered.

If you are interested in conferencing with veterans and eyewitnesses, please contact us on the details below to make a booking. Video conferences are free, last around 45 minutes, and are available on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons.

Please email cwr-edu@iwm.org.uk or call Beatrice Oakley on 020 7766 0132 if you would like to discuss video conferencing options, or to make a booking.

The Learning team at the Churchill War Rooms would like to invite schools to trial a new, highly interactive workshop via video conference. This session focuses on the role of the Cabinet War Rooms in Operation ‘Fortitude’, part of the D-Day deception campaign. Students will work in teams to plan and execute tasks contributing to the smooth running of the D-Day landings by creating diversions, spreading false intelligence and broadcasting misleading media reports. If you think your class is up to the challenge, and you would be willing to help us trial this brand new session, please get in touch with the Learning team - contacts below.

Suitability: Key Stage 3 and above
Duration: Variable, 60-120 minutes
Other expected commitments: 45-minute preparation lesson, at least 15 minutes follow-up time
This session will be available to trial from 4 May, dates and times are flexible. Due to the length and involved nature of this video conference, we will insist that you are registered with JANET Videoconferencing Service (JVCS) and are willing to undertake a short test connection prior to the conference proper. For more information about JVCS and video conferencing please go to http://www.ja.net/services/video/jvcs/.
